Cat Napping, Again.  charcoal on paper 81/2 x 11″

Even the most disciplined of internet surfers have a hard time resisting cats.  Hilarious videos, charming photos, heartfelt stories. As an artist the impulse to draw our cat and dog are endless and I know I’m not alone.

Lion- Mark Andres

A while back I posted a drawing of a talk at an intimate exhibit at the Helzer Art Gallery at Portland Community College’s  Rock Creek Campus. This from the site:

Animals—wild, domestic, exotic, or tame—have appeared in the history of art since the beginnings of time. The cave paintings we study today are among the earliest and most evocative works of art we know about, made hundreds of thousands of years before our human ancestors attempted to make likenesses of themselves.

…The works in this exhibition have been selected for their power, for their keen observations, and for their lack of sentimentality.  In an era awash in “cute” and “cartoon” animals, these direct and moving images serve as a sort of corrective, revealing a truer and more eloquent picture of creatures great and small.

The show is up until March 21, open Monday- Friday 10:00 am-4:00 pm and Saturday 9:00am-6:00pm. The gallery is located in Building 3 of the Rock Creek Campus of Portland Community College at 17705 NW Springville Road, Portland.

One of my favorite drawings was this one above by Mark Andres of a BIG cat, but when it comes to cats my friend Phyllis Trowbridge may have the most drawing-documented brother-sister pair. Phyllis, like me, finds her feline housemates irresistible and I have been truly awakened by her drawing sensibilities.

Phyllis and Mark are the two who inspired me to do daily drawings and post them on Facebook.  Cats are not our only subjects , but no doubt they will appear often.

I may not post here everyday but because it’s so easy to snap a photo and post it right from my iTouch  I have not missed a day at our Meiners & Lee Facebook page. If you visit, your “like” is always appreciated.
