Although my paintings start with a completely random “smoosh” of color and marks it’s interesting how what’s on my mind guides the outcome – in this case the Native American protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline. The top detail on the left shows the beginning “smoosh”. Within the abstraction I tease out figurative elements that are totally unrelated but eventually develop into unexpected narratives. (WATCH THE VIDEO) This way of working allows me to think less about subject and meaning and more about color, shape and values – leaving the interpretation to the viewer.
