I began this image in clay back in the 1980’s. The first rendition lives in the collection of Sonny and Gloria Kamm, the second was more refined and I added a lot of baggage to the boat. To me, this is an expression of what happens in all relationships, whether it is with a spouse, partner, pet, political constituency or, in the case of the woman who owns this original, with parts of one’s Self. It’s inevitable that we end up rowing in opposite directions and wonder why we are going around in circles – going nowhere. My wish for us all is that we figure it out sooner rather than later.
