Yesterday I was musing about the difference between drawing and painting. Today I was drawing in anticipation of painting.
This image is a sketch of an idea for a painting. It’s the umteenth version of a woman in a chair, the second version of a woman in a chair with a dog, cat and bird…looking out.
I did this sketch right on the canvas, as I have a very hard time transferring a small sketch I like onto a bigger stage. Something always gets lost. This way I was able to keep the gesture larger and looser and on the canvas where it can stay put.
But decisions need to be made about how to proceed: Where is the light coming from? How are the lights and darks going to be distributed? How will this affect the emotional tone of the painting? and so forth. Rather than muck up my canvas with “try-outs” I photographed the sketch and printed several copies.
Here are a couple of value options I am considering for composition.
What gets your attention? What’s your response to the tone set by the lighting?
Which one is better? That’s a tough question but still worth asking. It was once put to me like this: “If you were in a museum that was on fire and you could only save one, which would it be? GO!”
Pen and ink wash with white gouache and Caran d’Ache on watercolor paper. 6 1/2″ x 10 1/4″ Is it a drawing or a painting? I started with line using a nib pen and india ink. No question that is a drawing. Then I came into it with ink washes but still black and white. […]
Cat Napping, Again. charcoal on paper 81/2 x 11″ Even the most disciplined of internet surfers have a hard time resisting cats. Hilarious videos, charming photos, heartfelt stories. As an artist the impulse to draw our cat and dog are endless and I know I’m not alone. A while back I posted a drawing of […]
Cat Nap. Charcoal on paper. 8 1/2″ x 11 Drawing is especially fun when the subject just appears, you grab your sketchbook and go for it. No problem with the subject holding the pose for this one.
Charcoal on paper 8×11. What a beautiful day today! A day to take a sketch book outside and see what happens. I’m continually smitten by this view of Mt. St. Helens from our deck- power lines and all. I will draw and paint it many times I’m sure. I’ve been looking for a […]
Old guys hugging. Sometimes it’s 10PM and I am SO done for the day when I realize I have not made a Daily Drawing. But I am committed, right?, so I take a quick tour through my iTouch photos and see what might be a quick subject. Last night it was this image of Steve Mickey […]
Testing out a new app. Testing my ability to deal with such things. All I want so do is automatically post all entries here to Twitter, Facebook etc Wish me luck in this endeavor.
A few of my Facebook friends, who are real-life friends and artists I know and respect, started posting Daily Drawings in January. I jumped on the challenge about a week into the New Year and intend to post every day. So far, so good; today will be #46. They are not all great drawings but […]
